Viewing point Igualero

The viewing point Mirador de Igualero is located in the island centre, on the edge of the Garajonay National Park.

At an altitude of 1321m above sea level, the mirador offers fantastic views over vast, deep green ravines down to the blue sea – a place ideal to relax and enjoy beautiful views.

Description

Igualero is the highest situated rural hamlet of La Gomera. In the past, the inhabitants devoted themselves to cattle-raising and grazing, something that is still noted today. After several migrating waves Igualero is nowadays almost uninhabited.

The viewpoint of Igualero has a large parking area, where you can park excellently with a camper. The pretty chapel Ermita de San Francisco de Asís is right next to it.

You can spend the night here, surrounded by the quaint landscape on the border of the Garajonay National Park, and enjoy a quiet evening with a magnificent view of the 800m deep and 7km long ravines of Erque and Erquito as well as the table mountain of Chipude La Fortaleza, which is just across.

The Mirador de Igualero is also home to a curious work of art, the emblem of Silbo Gomero, which honors the whistling language, part of the Unesco World Cultural Heritage. This whistling was, and still is, used to communicate through gorges over long distances.

Activities in the surroundings

Near Igualero you have easy accesses to many great hiking trails, all of which are part of the island’s hiking net and are listed in the common maps. For example, you can take a 2km walk to the highest point of the island, the Alto de Garajonay, to enjoy a wonderful sunrise or sunset.

You can also hike up the table mountain La Fortaleza in Chipude. Another option is to take the longer hike down to Alajero to visit the dragon tree El Drago and visit Imada on the way back.

Of course another option is to walk within the National Park, since it is in so close proximity.

Also recommendable is a visit of the nearby village of El Cercado, which is only a short drive away. The picturesque village with its colorful houses is famous for its traditionally crafted pottery.

You can visit pottery workshops, as well as the interpretation center of Las Loceras, where visitors get a lot of information about ceramics and crafts and see an exhibition.
